He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Tom Hayes and Martha Mary Pack-Hayes; his daughters, Kathy and Rita; his sisters, Ruby Emory, Ellen Emory, Alice Martin and Louise Panther; his wife Patsy "Pat" Greene Hayes of Shelby; his stepdaughters, Penny Stroup (Howard) of Grover and Patricia Byers (Billy) of Grover; his grandchildren, Angelita Deluce and Kevin Mann; and his stepgrandchildren, Carl Philbeck, Gary Emery, Tony Philbeck and Annie Byers. He was also cherished by 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
