He was predeceased by: his parents, John Oscar and Cora Massengill Blackmon; his wife Margaret Spence Blackman; his son Shelton Spence, Sr.; his grandson Garrett Blackman; and his siblings, John Bennett Blackmon, Edward Junior Blackmon, William Oscar Blackmon, Betty Whaley, Mary Herring, Rena Parker, Esther Ammons and Catherine Ammons.

He is survived by: his children, Barbara Spence Raynor of Linden, NC and Dallas Blackman of Erwin, NC; his grandchildren, Keith Raynor, Nicole Raynor Cain and Shelton Spence, Jr.; his great grandchildren, Cameron Raynor, Barrett Raynor, Patrick Raynor, Drew Eaker, Megan Eaker, Colton Eaker, Addison Cain, Shania Spence, Lara Spence and Shelton Spence, III (Trey); and his siblings, Robert Blackmon of Shelby, NC and Annie Ammons of Garner, NC..
