He was predeceased by: his wife Elsie; his grandson Dexter Herring; and his parents, William Oscar and Elizabeth Herring. He is survived by: his children, Tammy Herring of Dunn, Charles Herring (Kara) of Erwin, Nathan Herring (Ramona) of Dunn and James Herring (Sandy) of Lillington; and his grandchildren, Derek, Alex, Tyler, Stephanie, Aubrey, Christina, Kenny, Lily and Bentley.
