He is survived by: his wife Marie Grimaldi Bates; and his children, Michelle Haire, Angela Coats (Wayne) of Erwin, Maria Bowden (Chad) of Morganton and Bruce Bates, Jr. (Jennifer) of Coats. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
