Avest was loved and cherished by many people including: wife Hattie Smith; sons, Keith Smith (Freda) of Winston-Salem, Maurice Smith and Jesse Johnson (Lydia); grandchildren, Ashley, Kelson Smith of Winston-Salem, Jessica Johnson of Fayetteville and Anetra Johnson of Spring Lake; sister Ethelene Elliott of Pennsylvania; and siblings-in-law, Clara Trevenel Brown (Henry) of Erwin, Dennis McNeill of Erwin, John McNeill of Erwin, Alberta McKoy (Aaron) of Maryland, Bessie McNeill and Henry McNeill (Martha) of Florida. Avest was also cherished by nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
