She was predeceased by: her husband Johnnie Hales; her siblings, Daphine Miller, Gene Raymond Philyaw and Carl Philyaw, Jr.; and her daughter-in-law Patricia Hales.
She is survived by: her sons, Roger Hales of Newport and Ron Hales (Cathy) of Wake Forest; her grandchildren, Joseph Hales, Bryan Hales (Tabitha), Lauren Bock (Geoff), Ashley Yawn (Will) and Adam Hales; and her siblings, Carline Pilkington, Franky Waters (Jack), Healon Snead and Anthony Philyaw (Twyla). She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
