He was predeceased by: his parents, Bruce Bennett Covington and Judy Caudle Covington; his son Charles Covington; and his siblings, Bruce Covington and Irene Covington.

He is survived by: his wife Elsie McLauchlin Covington; his sons, John Covington (James Beall) of Charlotte and Neil Covington (Jean) of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Julian Covington of Lewisville and Annika Covington of Lewisville; his stepchildren, Joyce Henry (Bruce) of Elk Park, David Henry (Karen) of Mint Hill and Roger Henry (Michelle) of Charlotte; and his siblings, Neil Covington of Greensboro and Joyce Ruff of Greensboro.
