He was predeceased by: his former wife Ruby Absher Darnell; and his siblings, Joseph Darnell, David Darnell, James Darnell, Isaac Darnell, Loraine Gentry, Vetrol Tucker and Mozelle Cooper.

He is survived by: his wife Demie Johnson Darnell; his children, Barry Franklin Darnell (Mary) of Elkin and Martha Swaim (Allen) of Jonesville; his grandchildren, Renee Haraway, Rick Swaim, Brian Darnell and Scott Darnell; and his great grandchildren, Alyssa Hensley, Neelie Swaim, Erin Crater, Andrew Darnell, Max Swaim, Logan Darnell, Samuel Darnell, Zach Darnell and Sarah Darnell.
