He was predeceased by: his parents, John H. Potter and Stella Turbyfill Potter; his siblings, William Potter, Plez Potter, Lillie Belle Clawson, Lucille Holtsclaw and Cassie Bruton; and his sister-in-law Tiny Church.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Potter of Elk Park; his sons, Jon Potter (April) of Newland and Jerry Jr. "Tater" Potter of Elk Park; his grandchildren, Candice Potter of Hampton, TN, Jon Jon Potter of Roan Mountain, TN and Bryson Calhoun; his great grandchild Mason Gleiser; and his sisters, Choy Davis of Elk Park, Ruth Hanson of Roan Mountain, TN and Hazel Carpenter of Hickory.
