He was predeceased by: his parents, Harrell Lavern and Ethelene Tyler Smith; and his brother Harrell Smith. He is survived by: his daughters, Diana Smith Hester of Elizabethtown, Nicole Smith Strickland of Whiteville and Stephanie Smith Seabrooks (Lawrence) of Elizabethtown; and his sister Wanda Thorton of Roseboro. He is also survived by ten grandchildren.
