He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Jessica Penson-Heyder; and his children, Clara Heyder of Norfolk, Ella Heyder Peluso (Tony) of Canada, Albrecht Heyder (Josephine) of Elizabeth City, Dietrich Heyder, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Markus Heyder (Erin) of Point Harbor, Erika Heyder-Seeley (Adam) of Raleigh and Gunther Heyder (Leela) of Kitty Hawk.
