He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius Alfred Yates and Mildred Proctor Yates Zanavich; his wife Dorothy Eason Yates; his son James Edward Yates, Jr.; and also, Margaret Yates Brickhouse and Shirley Ann Yates Tagmyer.
He is survived by: his daughters, Cynthia Yates Wilson, Gail Yates Carnagua (Rick) and Dianne Yates Bryant (Jeff); his grandchildren, Randall Adam Wilson, Catie Wilson Hartman, Toni Carnagua Beal (Chris) and Dustin R. Kintzele (Leanne); and his great grandchildren, Madison Hartman, Chloe, Ellie, Lucy, Griffin Beal, Landon and Brendon Kintzele.
