He was predeceased by: his parents, William Zeb and Catherine Ruth Merkey Gammons; his siblings, Clarence, Harold, Leonard, Charles, Edgar Gammons, Mary Pauline Gammons, Betty Ruth Spencer and Irene Stevens; and his friend Josh Pruitt.
He is survived by: his siblings, Ralph Gammons (Linda) and Inez Roberts; his aunt Mary Anderson; his niece Linda Pulliam; and his nephew David Martin. He is also survived by nieces, nephews.
In lieu of floral tributes, the family suggests that memorials be made in Sam's name to Ancora Compassionate Care of Rockingham County.
