He was predeceased by: his parents, Barnette Columbus Matthews and Toy Spillman Matthews Rushing; his daughter Baby Matthews; his grandson Adam Ross Matthews; and his half-siblings, Marshall Rushing, Jr. and Bessie Strickland.
He is survived by: his wife Alma Coe Matthews; his son Chris Matthews (Dawn); his grandson Garrett Matthews (Callie); his half-sister Brenda Holcomb (Stewart); and his extended family, Earlie Coe (Brenda Coe), Lori Wyble (Lyn Wyble) and Shannon Brettl (Thomas Brettl).
