He was predeceased by: his parents, John Alvin and Lois Sanderson Carawan. He is survived by: his close friend Ila Marie Bender; his children, Christopher Wayne Carawan of Pinetown, NC, Kenneth James Carawan of Burlington, VT and Jackie Ann Bolton of Georgia; his stepchildren, Frankie Bender and Erica Morales; and his sister Jenny Stotesberry (Jeffrey). He is also survived by ten grandchildren.
