He was predeceased by: his parents, Weaver Dallas Swain and Hazel Allen Gentry. He is survived by: his wife Joan Swain; his children, Thomas Swain Jr. (Lynn), Jeffrey Swain (Jennifer) and Angela Hamlett (Woody); his brother Dallas Swain; his nieces and nephews, Tracy Swain, Melissa Filzen and Jason Stevens; his brother-in-law John Crenshaw; his grandchildren, Brayden, Savannah, Parker, Hayden, Brycen, Grace Ellen, Brandis and Blaine; and his great grandchild Nolan Allen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Durham Rescue Mission.
