He was predeceased by: his parents, Emiliano Alva and María Alva; his grandchildren, Pía Urmeneta, Santiago and Savannah Alva; his brothers, Dr. José Alva and Emiliano Alva (Josefina); and his brother-in-law Guillermo Mirás.
He is survived by: his wife Elsa (Mirás); his children, Luz Alva-Bullock of Durham, NC, Florence Alva of Lynchburg, VA, Juan Pablo Alva of Raleigh, NC, Gonzalo Alva (Gretchen) of Camarillo, CA, Constanza Alva (Gastón) of Urmeneta, Fernando Alva (Marija) of Boston, MA and Cristian Alva of Chapel Hill, NC; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Irena), Lucas, Sophia, Natalia, Victoria Bullock, Gaston, Isabel, Tomás, Francis Urmeneta, Sebastián, Spencer Alva, Lucy, Elsie Grace and Oscar Alva; and his great grandchild Tycho. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
