He was predeceased by: his parents, James Hastings and Ethel Whitfield; his wife LaWanda "Kay" Whitfield; his brothers, Ira Whitfield and Milton Whitfield; his daughter Rebecca "Becky" Couch; and his stepson Ricky Fields.
He is survived by: his children, James Franklin Whitfield, Jr. (Janice), Joyce Crabtree, Karen Bivins (George), Robin Stiles, Pamela "Pam" Whitfield and Funderburk; his stepdaughters, Cindy Hunt and Debbie Parnell; and his sisters, Mary Lou Holt, Ruth Baker, Juanita Ross, Sue Ward (Henry) and Patricia Whitfield. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 8th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Clements Funeral Home (1105 Broad St, Durham, NC 27705). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 8th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Clements Funeral Chapel (1105 Broad St, Durham, NC 27705).
