He was loved and cherished by many people including: his father America; his cousin Margaret Nicholl Forbes (Paul Forbes); his birth father Harry; his mother Catherine Nicholl; his wife Barbara Nicholl; his children, Eleanor Nicholl of Greenville, NC, Richard Nicholl (Laurel Powell) of Raleigh and David Nicholl (Amy McCaskill) of Durham; his grandchildren, Cannon, Aley, Quinn, Ella, Violet, Lola and Cyrus; his sister Margaret Taylor (Tom Taylor) of Dunn; his sister-in-law Ellen O'Hara (Brian O'Hara) of Seattle; his nieces and nephews, Lucie Moody, Charles Locher, Dorothy Carraway, Dan Packard, IV, Sean O'Hara and Michael O'Hara; his sister Myra Rhoades; and his sister-in-law Nancy Packard.
