He was predeceased by: his parents, Janie Bell Yates and James Norman Yates; and his sister Elizabeth Bowles. He is survived by: his sisters, Gladys Sandlin, Elma Brewer and Thelma Lee Swann; his wife Mary Frances Greene (Jane); his son Jimmy (Marlena) of Raleigh; his granddaughters, Katie Thomas (Anthony) of Charlotte and Kristen Umstead (John) of Raleigh; his great grandchildren, Abigail Thomas, Mallory Thomas, Lily Thomas, Harper Umstead and Wesley Umstead; and his nieces and nephews, Miriam Beauchamp, Ed Brewer, Martha Gray, Charles Greene, Rebecca Matthews, Jim Sandlin, Betsy Smith and Jerry Swann. He is also survived by relatives, former employees and his son's friends.
