He was predeceased by: his parents, Esten Lewis and Gladys Williams Herring; his wife LaRue Herring; his sons, Jimmy Herring and David Herring; and his brothers, Esten Lewis Herring Jr., Keith Herring and Roger Herring.
He is survived by: his children, Thomas Herring (Sara) of Grantham, Jon Esten Herring (George Stuhl Jr.) of Florida and Vivian McIntosh; his daughters-in-law, Sandra Herring of Grantham and Barbara Herring of Mount Olive; and his sister Mary Ann Herring of Newton Grove. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
