He was predeceased by: his parents, Johnny Gurganus and Irene Gurganus; his stepdaughter Brenda Godwin; and his siblings, Frank Gurganus, Willie Gurganus, John Gurganus Jr. and Inez Brock.
He is survived by: his wife Julia Boswell Gurganus; his children, Joseph Gurganus of Dudley, Ervin Lee Gurganus Jr. of Goldsboro and Tammy Renee Gurganus of Charlotte; his stepson Ricky Godwin of Goldsboro; his brother Danny Gurganus of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Joshua Grim, Joseph Gurganus Jr., Nicole Powell, Maria Best, Harley Smith, Jessie Gibson and Jason Gurganus; his great grandchildren, Olivia Gurganus, Madison Gurganus, Marianna Gurganus, Christopher Best Jr. and Addison Smith; and his sisters, Dorothy Porter, Bett Reinhard, Mildred Cannon, Dolly Canaioni, Linda Pope and Beulah Howell.
