He was predeceased by: his parents, Dennis Bernard Upchurch and Maggie Senter Upchurch; his spouse Shirley Jean Self Upchurch; his siblings, Carlos James Upchurch, Wayne Eugene Upchurch, Bernard Arswood Upchurch of Dennis, Hurley Lee Upchurch and Mildred Marie Latham; his daughter Diane Upchurch Chamberlain; and his grandchild Keturah Burford.
He is survived by: his daughters, Deborah Jean Butcher (Rocky Butcher), Juanita Lynn Hollar (Jeff Hollar) of Hickory, NC and Donna Karen Knapp (Mark Knapp) of Marion, NC; and his sister Brenda Pressley of Mt. Airy, NC. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and an abundance of nieces and nephews.
