He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Frank Koontz and Ruth Poole Koontz; and his brothers, Clifton Koontz and Bud Koontz. He is survived by: his wife Judy Loftin Koontz; his daughters, Shayne Koontz Ingersoll (Dan Clifford) of Rock Hill, SC and Joy Koontz Harman (Ryan) of Lexington; his sister Gayle Koontz Mason (Larry) of Concord; his grandchildren, Emmy, Caroline, Anne Riley Harman and Sebastian Ingersoll; his sister-in-law Pansy Koontz of Thomasville; and his aunt Geraldine Howard of Greensboro. He is also survived by Nieces and Nephews.
