He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlie Latham Barnes and Hortense Ambrose Barnes; and his brothers, Jon W. Barnes, Sr., Charles L. Barnes and Gerald L. Barnes.

He is survived by: his wife Daphne Spear Barnes of Creswell, NC; his sons, Ronald L. "Ron" Barnes, Jr. (Carolyn) and Glenn E. Barnes (Patti) of Washington, NC; his siblings, Margaret Barnes Furlough (John) of Greenville, NC and Charlie W. Barnes of Waynesboro, VA.; his grandchildren, Anna Barnes McCarthy (Brian), Ronni Barnes Sprague (Josh) and Allison Barnes Jones (Benton); and his great grandchildren, Mitchell, Mason, Emma and Harrison.
