She was loved and cherished by many people including: her husband Rodney Smoot; her parents, Sherry Williams (Richard) of Troutman, NC and Harold Yount (Anita) of Cherryville, NC; her children, Samantha Vanderwerken and Eric Vanderwerken of Iron Station, NC.; her sister Tammy Lowman (Scott) of Walhalla, SC.; her nephews, Dustin Laney (Cari) of Portland, OR, Petty Officer and Class Zach Laney (Hillary) of Whidbey Island, WA.; and her grandparents, Asa Chamberlain, Rachel Peaden, Jack and Roberta Yount.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials can be made to the church in memory of Melanie.
