He was predeceased by: his parents, Pinkney Madison Carter and Woodie Hedden Carter; his wife Shelby Jean Abernathy Carter; and his brothers, Howard "Bogie" Carter, Joe Carter, Kenny Carter and Richard Carter.

He is survived by: his children, Robert "Bobby" D. Carter (Celena) of Hickory, Tina Sampson (Tony "Wahoo") of Catawba and Lisa Martin of Newton; his siblings, Doyle Carter (Janie) of Hickory, Marvin Carter of Blue Field and Betty Eckard (Barry) of Burnsville; his grandchildren, David, Dylan, Logan, James, Alicia, Chuck, Jordan, Marisa and Tony Jr.; and his great grandchildren, Zeke, Eli, Emmett, Gabriel, Ian, Canaan, Luke, Levi, Hunner, Isabella and Wyatt.
