He was predeceased by: his parents, Hubert Lee Carlton and Edna Parsons Carlton; and his sisters, Penny Carlton and Margo Carlton. He is survived by: his niece Aundrea Howell; his wife Karen Smith Carlton; his sons, Walter Scott Smith (Jessica) of Newton, NC, Kyle Smith, Teyon Carlton and Tray Carlton of Virginia; and his siblings, Debra Howell of Washington, D. C., Arnold Carlton (Lonesca) of Newman and Hubert Lee Carlton of Taylorsville, NC. He is also survived by four grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
