He was predeceased by: his father Ralph Matthews; his wife Brenda Michael Matthews; and his siblings, Ralph Little Matthews, Charles Little, Catherine Matthews Sigmon, Carolyne Villard, Mary Ellen Matthews, Doreen Lail, Norma Jean Matthews and Helen Waldrop.

He is survived by: his sons, Jereme Matthews (Shannon) of Newton and Eric Matthews (Tonia) of Hickory; and his sister Edna Ledford (Larry) of Newton.
