He was predeceased by: his mother Annie Margaret Jones Burgess; and his siblings, Ann King and Benjamin Oscar Burgess. He is survived by: his wife Jo Ellen Matthews Burgess; his children, Melinda B. Edgerton (Chris) and Stephen Ray Burgess (Mindy); his sister Tempie Leonard (Plummer); and his grandchildren, Gwen Burgess, Emily Burgess, Amelia Hartsell (Malachi), Ainsley Edgerton and Jonah Edgerton.
