He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Edgar Phelps and Mildred Phelps; and his siblings, Earl Phelps and Glada Phelps. He is survived by: his wife Virginia; his daughter Janet Ernst (Joe); his pets, Jax and Ginger; his sister Jane Strandberg of Littleton, CO; his sister-in-law Mary Ellen Phelps of Barberton, OH.; his nephews, Dale Phelps, Gary Phelps and Greg Strandberg; and his niece Lynn Ford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Broadus Church at 59 Green Street, Concord, NC 28027.
