He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert "Rob" Tabor and Margaret Morris Kimzey; and his sister Carolyn Ives. He is survived by: his wife Norma Lumsden Kimzey of Clyde; his children, Liz Kimzey (Amy Seed) of Leicester and Rob Kimzey of Durham; and his brother Jim Kimzey (Janet) of Brevard. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation in Waynesville or Habitat for Humanity in Waynesville.

“So sad to learn of Bob's death. During his years in Chapel Hill we were good friends. I was especially honored that he asked me to be one of the trustees of an independent school that he established for teenagers who didn't fit into the usual high school mold. Unfortunately, it didn't last long, but it helped several youth during its existence. Bob was an educator and ardent civil rights activist, and I was pleased that we continued to keep in touch after he left Chapel Hill. I'm in morning.”
