He was predeceased by: his parents, Duff McCoy Bumgarner and Claudia Brown Bumgarner; his wife Mary Annie Bumgarner; his son Thomas "Tom" Bumgarner; and his son-in-law Melvin Norton.

He is survived by: his children, David "Andy" Bumgarner (Mary) of Cleveland, Jerry Bumgarner of Cleveland, Gary "Dale" Bumgarner of Cleveland and Janice Norton of Statesville; and his siblings, Jim Bumgarner of Cleveland and Janie Waller (Jerry) of Woodleaf.
