He was predeceased by: his siblings, Annie Mae Shand, John Jr. and Charles. He is survived by: his sisters, Rosa Lee Watson and Carolyn Ann Creech; his spouse Elgie Bea Smith; his children, Sharon Coward, Nevelle Strickland (Harold) and Joseph M. Whitey, Jr. (Rosita); his grandchildren, Shelida Coward, Courtney Edwards, Caylor Whitley, Ashland Whitley Tovar, Christopher Hunter, Sahraya Hunter, Olivia Whitley and Latarcha Lee; and his great grandchildren, Kourtney Edwards, Udohiyu 'Daji Hunter, Jayden Tovar, Natali Tovar and Gerald Lee. He is also survived by nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
