He is survived by: his son Jay; his uncle Tony; his wife Janice Champion; his children, Melissa Champion Hurst of Benson, Kelly Beasley (Jimmy) of Selma and Johnny Ray Champion, Jr. (Jay); his grandson Tanner Williamson; his close friend Serenity Beasley; his siblings, Betty Jewell Jones of Clayton, Ann Carroll (Mark) of Holly Springs, Tony Champion (Lynn) of Clayton and Terry Champion of Raleigh; and his niece Nettie Cox of Clayton. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
