He was predeceased by: his parents, Coy Burnell and Mattie Gladys Benton Smith; his wife Jean Knight Smith; his siblings, Frank Smith, Jack Smith (Viola), Eugene Smith (JoAnn), George Smith (Martha) and Doris S. Robinson (Robbie); and his brothers-in-law, Ralph G. Knight, Jr. (Ella Shirley Knight), Hurley Jones, Donald R. Knight, Henry D. Brown and Kenneth M. Knight.

He is survived by: his sons, Daniel G. Smith of Clayton and Stephen R. Smith of Clayton; his sister Lillie S. Jones of Mount Olive, NC; and his sisters-in-law, Helen Joy Knight Brown of Bedford, NH and Ellen Pettus of Keysville, VA..
