He was predeceased by: his parents, Russell Eugene Hefner and Lillie Mae Roseman Hefner; his brothers, Ricky Hefner and Marion Hefner; and his brother-in-law Dale Travis.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Shook Hefner; his sons, Rusty Hefner of Claremont and Kevin Shook (Dakotah) of Conover; his siblings, Randy Hefner (Darlene) of Claremont, Mark Hefner (Wendy) of Claremont, Terry Hefner (Tamarah) of Claremont, Linda Travis (Douglas) of Claremont and Kathy Travis of Claremont; and his grandson Mason Hefner A.
