He was predeceased by: his parents, James Luther Smith and Jesse Mae Basinger Smith; his former wife Betty Carpenter Smith; and his wife Joyce Burris Smith. He is survived by: his brothers, Robert Lee Smith and Odell Irving; and his children, Charles Ray Smith, Jr. (Kimanh Nguyen) of Concord, Timothy Bryant Smith (Tim) of Albemarle, Daniel K. Smith (Tammy) of Kannapolis, James Christopher Smith (Traci) of China Grove, Don Peele of Cornelius and Donna Peele Mattison (Paul) of Sherrill's Ford. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
