He was predeceased by: his parents, Cullen Fortenberry, Sr. and Lela Haynes Fortenberry; his wife Betty Sue Williams Fortenberry; and his siblings, Margie Seals, James, Max and Cullen Fortenberry, Jr..

He is survived by: his goddaughter Cindy Hoyle (Vic) of Cherryville; his niece Sheila Clark of Valdese; his nephews, Rick Fortenberry of Connelly Springs and Ronnie Fortenberry of Denver; his grandchildren, Steven Hoyle (Allison) and Melissa Hoyle (Caleb Herndon); and his close friends, Jeanette Mauney, Robert and Joanna Franklin.
