He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Lewis Shotwell and Mary Stuart Shotwell; his wife Elizabeth McFall Shotwell; and his son Robert Lewis Shotwell. He is survived by: his daughter Elizabeth Shotwell Jacobs of Fort Mill, SC; his grandsons, Kyle Jacobs and Michael Jacobs; his son William Lee Shotwell of Raleigh, NC; his daughter-in-law Stephanie Shotwell; his grandchildren, Dallas Shotwell, Maverick Shotwell and Presley Shotwell; and his family William.
His contributions to the advertising industry were numerous, including serving as President of the Advertising Club of Charlotte and the North Carolina Governor of the American Advertising Federation. 1987, he was rightfully acclaimed as the "Advertising Man of the Year.".
