He was predeceased by: his wife Betty Jo Burgin Helms; and his brothers, Donald and Joe Helms. He is survived by: his children, Wanda Helms Grose (Chris) and Thomas Eugene Helms, Jr. (Allison); his grandchildren, Lindsey Helms and Kenneth Griffin (Betsy); his great grandchild Delcan Griffin; and his sisters, Delores Dulin, Mary Edwards (Dave) and Geraldine Lefler. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews.
