He is survived by: his wife Reba Efird Helms; his sons, Jeffery and Jeremy Helms; his grandsons, Matthew and Zachary Helms; his sisters-in-law, Sharon Thompson and Melba Barbee; and his nephew Johnny Helms (Sonia).
