He was predeceased by: his parents, Cole Smith and Nelle Motts Smith; his sisters, Marilyn McCurry and Sandra Jackson; and his son Drew Robinson Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Sansing; his sons, Derek Coleman Smith and Justin Whelchel Smith; the mother of his children Helen Howard; and his siblings, Ellen Vance and Larry Smith. He is also survived by six grandchildren.
