Though Emmett may no longer walk beside us, his memory will forever be enshrined in the fabric of the lives of those Emmett touched, a beacon of light guiding us through the darkness. In his absence, his spirit lives on — a gentle whisper in the breeze, a ray of sunlight on a cloudy day, a reminder that love knows no boundaries.
He is survived by: his children, Richard Hunt Mathews (Ellie) and Susan Slate Mathews-Duvall (Roger); and his brother David Hodnett Mathews, Sr. (Brenda). He is also survived by four grandchildren, and many other loving family members and close friends.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 28th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Myers Park United Methodist Church (1501 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC 28207). A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 30th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Forest Lawn Cemetery (8100 Granby St, Norfolk, VA 23505).
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the National Park Foundation, veteran's organizations, historical societies, or to the American Heart Association.
