He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel E. Thompson and Elizabeth Barnett Thompson "Betty"; his son-in-law Bill Bigger; and his grandchildren, Setlar Sykes and Ashton Sykes.
He is survived by: his wife Sara Smith Thompson "Sara"; his children, Neva Perry Sykes (Vernon), Dana T. Thompson (David), Teresa Royer (Don), Leigh Bigger and Susan Crowell (David); and his grandchildren, Kenneth Perry (Courtney), Jordan Sykes (Grace), Christi Thompson Anderson (Ryan), Justin Thompson (Vanessa), Thomas Royer (Melissa), Stephanie Royer Adams (David), Matthew Bigger (Lauren), Kaylee Bigger Kuzbury (Daniel), Taylor Crowell and Meagan Crowell. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203 to either "Helping Hands Ministry" or "Benevolent Fund".
