He was predeceased by: his parents, Dale Gilbert and Anna Grace Ives; his brother Robert; and his nephew Rob Ives. He is survived by: his wife Virginia Ruth Lowry Ives of Chapel Hill; his sister-in-law Lois Ives; and his grandchildren, Matthew Ives, Andrew Davis, William Ives, Alison Davis, Jeremy Ives, Daniel Ives, Jr., Madeleine Ives and Thomas Ives.
