He is survived by: his wife Judy Turbeville Yates; his children, Christopher R. Yates of New York, Wesley Leon Yates of Wilmington and Heather Yates Hinson (Kiley) of Chadbourn; his sisters, Nancy Yates Dove (Robert) of Chadbourn and Mary Helen Yates; and his grandchildren, Ethan Hinson, Cooper Hinson, Reid Hinson, Logan Yates, Judah Yates and Christian Strickland.
