He was predeceased by: his parents, Howell Hammer and Helen Shook Hammer; and his stepbrother Michael Gaskins. He is survived by: his wife Peggy C. Hammer; his children, David William Hammer (Rachel) of Taylorsville and Sara H. Thick (Graham) of Hickory; his half-sisters, Cindy Stevenson of Claremont and Amanda Hammer of Hickory; and his grandsons, Julian Hammer, Lance and Jackson Thick.
