He was predeceased by: his parents, Van Tharp Sr. and Euleta Webb Tharp; and his sister Keitha Mae Tharp. He is survived by: his wife Kalavathi Tharp; his son Robert Eric Tharp; and his niece Nanthini Arumugam (Brenden Green).
