He was predeceased by: his parents, James Neal Spain and Bernice Cornett Spain; and his sister Frances S. Lingerfelt. He is survived by: his sons, David Neil Spain (Linda) of Garner, NC and Stephen Gibbs Spain (Lisa) of Fuquay-Varina, NC; his grandson Patrick Neil Spain of Raleigh, NC; and his close friend Jackie Greer of Petersburg, VA..

“Neil worked with my sister in VA many years ago. I think she was his secretary. He kept in touch with her until she passed in 2013. I met Neil once years ago. He called me every Christmas and other times during the year just to catch up. When I talked to him months ago (about his cooking) he sounded just like he has for all these years we kept in touch. I always loved hearing from Neil. He was a great man. I am so sorry for your loss. He always talked about his family. Linda Rowland”
